Author Introduction

Fyodor Dostoyevsky, in full Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky, Dostoyevsky also spelled Dostoevsky, (born November 11 [October 30, Old Style], 1821, Moscow, Russia—died February 9 [January 28, Old Style], 1881, St. Petersburg), Russian novelist and short-story writer whose psychological penetration into the darkest recesses of the human heart, together with his unsurpassed moments of illumination, had an immense influence on 20th-century fiction.

Dostoyevsky is usually regarded as one of the finest novelists who ever lived. Literary modernism, existentialism, and various schools of psychology, theology, and literary criticism have been profoundly shaped by his ideas. His works are often called prophetic because he so accurately predicted how Russia’s revolutionaries would behave if they came to power. In his time he was also renowned for his activity as a journalist.

Blurb

The perfect introduction to the many talents of this iconic Russian writer: six short stories ranging from satire to tragedy

Dostoevsky was a writer of unparalleled psychological intensity, capable of evoking startling absurdity and scorching social satire. In this collection of newly translated stories, scenes from the turbulent underbelly of St Petersburg are shot through with an acerbic, unforgiving humor, only to soften into moments of tragedy and unexpected tenderness.

An arrogant nobleman disgraces himself, and betrays his ideals, at an aide's wedding. A struggling writer stumbles upon a cemetery where the dead talk to each other. A civil servant finds unexpected clarity from inside the belly of a crocodile. These stories, by turns both wickedly sharp and unexpectedly charming, illuminate Dostoevsky's dazzling versatility as a writer.

My Opinion

To be remembered for ages

A Bad Business by Fyodor Dostoevsky is a wonderful narration of human minds and relationships. Filled with humor and satire, the book is going to give you a deep insight into what people think about each other. Although, the book is translated but it did not lose its originality. Each and every makes a different imprint on your mind. An unforgettable book with some beautiful stories. I, not only enjoyed the book but loved it.

I would, definitely, give the book 5 stars. Thanks to Netgalley and Pushkin Press for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.

Narrative Style

A Bad Business by Fyodor Dostoevsky is translated by Nicolas Pasternak Slater and Maya Slater. The narration is done marvelously without losing its original essence. Although, it was a little bit of a difficult due to its in depth viewpoint.
