Author Introduction

Born in India, Ejaz Ahamed lived in the UAE until early adulthood before moving to Australia. His passion for exploring social injustices and racial inequalities influenced his writings. In the past, he wrote poems about life, the world and its complexities. This is his debut novel. After studying at The University of Melbourne, he spent many years travelling to broaden his views of the world.

Blurb

Extreme poverty wasn't the only impediment in seven-year-old Kalki's life. Her pitch-black dark skin exacerbated her plight, making her a centre of ridicule in her village. Believing he's the cause of his sister's affliction, Karthi joins Kalki's side as they become consumed with ways to whiten her skin. But the determined siblings invite more trouble and lose their mother's life savings. Their journey to retrieve the money brings together a mysterious ally, an exotic festival, a divine intervention and a con artist changing their destinies in ways no one could have predicted.

My Opinion

An Insightful Read...............

Dancers in the Dark by Ejaz Ahamed brings to you a reflective tale of a girl who is struggling emotionally and socially for her skin color. The storyline immensely grasps you right from the start. The author has very beautifully voiced out the words of those girls who are judged for their skin color. The struggles they follow either in terms of marriage or daily life is really painful. Another thing mentioned by the author in the plot is casteism. People are treated according to their castes and lower caste people get only disrespect. Karthi and Kalki's characters are the central attraction. Because of Kalki's skin color and caste, she is damned everywhere. It was very disheartening to read this. The whole book is focused on the brother sister duo and on their steps to get a fair skin.

The author with his eccentric writing style makes the story heartful and emotional. There are also small bits and pieces in the story where we get a true picture of our society. Definitely, the book deserves to be 5 stars. I would like to recommend the book for everyone who want to read something insightful and reflective.
