Author Introduction

Ruchira Gupta has pioneered laws, policies, protocols, conventions and Best Practice approaches in the Feminist Abolitionist struggle against sex-trafficking in the UN, globally and India. Her work will be archived at Stanford Library and will be open access for students across the world to study. Her journey began as a journalist, when she made the Emmy-winning documentary, The Selling of Innocents. With the help of the documentary, she testified to the US Senate for the passage of the first Trafficking Victim Protection Act and to the UN for the passage of the UN Protocol to End Trafficking in Persons. She founded the Indian anti-sex trafficking organization, Apne Aap Women Worldwide, that supports thousands of prostituted and at risk girls in India. She is a visiting professor at New York University, and Distinguished Scholar at University of California, Berkley. She is the editor of a feminist journal for SAGE, Antyajaa: Indian Journal of Women and Social Change and two anthologies- River of Flesh & Other Stories and The Essential Gloria Steinem Reader. She has been presented the French Légion honneur, an Emmy, and the Clinton Global Citizen, UN NGO CSW Woman of Distinction award. She dreams of a world in which no human being is bought or sold.

A Powerful Story of Courage...................

 

I Kick and I Fly by Ruchira Gupta is a wonderful work of fiction outlining courage and woman power. It is not just a story, but an inspiration for all those women out there. How many times, as a woman have we all taken our lives for granted? But have we ever thought that all women are not that privileged? I Kick and I Fly throws light on all the unprivileged women who want so many things from their lives, like education and respect. The book is an immense call to all of us to push our society for better change. I Kick and I Fly is a voice, an opinion, and a roar.

 

Heera, a girl from the Bihar Red Light Area, narrates her struggles to give her life meaning. The more you delve deeper into the book, the more the connection will trigger in your mind. Heera's courage amidst all the problems is something to salute. The author's work is amazing and unforgettable. Her writing style is a wonderful one. The plot did not slow down a bit. With every chapter, you will witness some heartbreaking and some uplifting moments, which makes it a wonderful read. As a reader, I could feel Heera's pain and fear with every word. I would not say it was my favorite part, but I would say it was an eye-opening part when I came to know that girls are sold to fair owners at a very tender age. It was really painful to see what treatment they got after this. Words fall short to define this marvelous book. Definitely, 5 stars for the book.
