Author Introduction

Satoshi Yagisawa was born in Chiba, Japan, in 1977. Days at the Morisaki Bookshop, his debut novel, was originally published in 2009 and won the Chiyoda Literature Prize.

Blurb

The Japanese bestseller: a tale of love, new beginnings, and the comfort that can be found between the pages of a good book.

When twenty-five-year-old Takako's boyfriend reveals he's marrying someone else, she reluctantly accepts her eccentric uncle Satoru's offer to live rent-free in the tiny room above his shop.

Hidden in Jimbocho, Tokyo, the Morisaki Bookshop is a booklover's paradise. On a quiet corner in an old wooden building, the shop is filled with hundreds of second-hand books. It is Satoru's pride and joy, and he has devoted his life to the bookshop since his wife left him five years earlier.

Hoping to nurse her broken heart in peace, Takako is surprised to encounter new worlds within the stacks of books lining the shop.

My Opinion

Days at the Morisaki Bookshop by Satoshi Yagisawa is a treat for the book lovers. Takako's story unveils so many hidden secrets in the form of emotions which a book lover always have. No one may have ever thought about this that how a books can shape our thoughts. The characters are simple and relatable. I would want read more about Takako and Wada's love story. For me, the best part of the book were so many Japanese authors and their books. But, the book is more centered towards the bookshop and coffeeshop. I wanted to see more of Takako's inclination towards books which was absent. Although, I loved the narrator's voice and accent. Her english in japanese accent was so beautiful.

Takako and Momoko's relation was something to cherish upon. The book is also themed on self discovery and emotional value. Saturo also impressed me with his generous nature. So, it was basically Takako, Momoko and Saturo who are searching for answers of their doings in life. You cannot put down the book even for a minute. Definitely, the book deserves 4 stars for its simplicity and narration.
