Author Introduction

Rebecca F. Kuang is a Marshall Scholar, Chinese-English translator, and the Astounding Award-winning and the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, and World Fantasy Award nominated author of the Poppy War trilogy and the forthcoming Babel. Her work has won the Crawford Award and the Compton Crook Award for Best First Novel. Blurb

Athena Liu is a literary darling and June Hayward is literally nobody.

White lies
When Athena dies in a freak accident, June steals her unpublished manuscript and publishes it as her own under the ambiguous name Juniper Song.

Dark humour
But as evidence threatens June’s stolen success, she will discover exactly how far she will go to keep what she thinks she deserves.

Deadly consequences…
What happens next is entirely everyone else’s fault.

My Opinion

Yellowface by R.F. Kuang is an amazing slow-burn thriller with a delicious climax. The story is absolutely fresh and gives you a wonderful insight into the publishing industry. It was very hard to judge June's character. At some point, the readers are going to feel that she is doing everything right. But, after a few pages, the whole scenario changes. For a moment, I was convinced that there was a real ghost in the story. The author draws a very thin line between good and bad. The readers are left to decide on their own. And the plot moves at such a pace that it keeps you invested throughout the story.

Only after reading this will you be able to know the true hardship that an author puts behind writing a story. So many good books go unnoticed just because they do not have good PR agencies. Reading it was an adventure and a journey through the roads of mystery and thrill. And, when the climax drops, it just blows out of my mind. But I must caution you that the climax is open-ended and leaves you thinking more about what would have happened next. And it is my humble request to the author to write its sequel. One of my favorite books of 2023 and definitely a 5-star read.
