Mr. Niyogi's Last Audit | S N Rao | Contemporary Fiction | Netgalley ARC Book Review

Have you ever thought of helping out a stranger just for the sake of humanity ❓❓❓

I have done it sometimes but only if I feel safe around them. Not every stranger is good at heart.

How far would you go to save a stranger?

As a 77-year-old with advanced Parkinson’s disease, Mr. Niyogi’s days are saturated with the pain gradually taking over his monotonous routine. Although the future seems bleak, he’s left wondering if he still has a purpose. Will he simply fade into obscurity, or fight to leave an unforgettable legacy?

Then the news breaks of a young man stranded on a remote island with no rescue in sight.

Mr. Niyogi cannot ignore his protective instincts. Despite his physical and mental limitations and skepticism of those around him, he resolves to take matters into his own hands. Though he knows his chances of success are slim, he refuses to abandon the marooned young man, and the hope of devoting his last days doing one last act of sacrifice gives him a new lease on life.

But how can an elderly Indian accountant in declining health rescue a miner trapped in the Maldives?

My Opinion

Mr. Niyogi's Last Audit by S N Rao is contemporary fiction that throws light on human emotions and responsibilities towards each other. The story is set in a simple family where our protagonist is an old bedridden account genius. But his self-consciousness takes him to push his limits even during his treatment. The plot is good but could have been better if it had been more focused on the medical complications. I felt that the central theme of the story was sidelined and emerged at a much later stage. The reader may lose interest after the first 100 pages. Also, the language needed more depth where the emotions of the characters needed more clarification. The climax seemed rushed upon and too easy. The book seems to have been trimmed down to main details only. More character research is needed, especially on the protagonist and his fight, so that a reader can connect well with them. The book deserves 3 stars.
