Effia and Esi: two sisters with two very different destinies. One sold into slavery; one a slave trader's wife. The consequences of their fate reverberate through the generations that follow. Taking us from the Gold Coast of Africa to the cotton-picking plantations of Mississippi; from the missionary schools of Ghana to the dive bars of Harlem, spanning three continents and seven generations, Yaa Gyasi has written a miraculous novel - the intimate, gripping story of a brilliantly vivid cast of characters and through their lives the very story of America itself.
Yaa Gyasi was born in Ghana and raised in Huntsville, Alabama. Her debut novel, Homegoing, was awarded the National Book Critics Circle’s John Leonard Award for best first book, the PEN/Hemingway Award for a first book of fiction, the National Book Foundation’s “5 under 35” honors for 2016, and the American Book Award. She lives in Brooklyn.
My Opinion
Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi is a thought provoking story spanning through generations from Africa to America. It's actually a journey from slavery to free life. The author has woven a tale of two sisters who are far apart from each other, but their worlds are the same. A story that started from slavery to the atrocities inflicted by their own people to a modern world. The book is atmospheric as it takes us to the tribes of Ghana and their culture. Although there were too many characters for the reader to establish the relation between all of them. Some stories were just left incomplete for the readers to think about.
The most heart-wrenching incident was that it's their own people who are sending them as slaves to British and Americans. The climax was the most satisfying moment of the book. It was like I found my motherland. The book definitely deserves 5 stars.
