The Narrows | Ronald Malfi | Horror | Book Review

Which horror book do you think should be adapted into a movie or TV show ❓❓❓

I have watched Stephen King's books into web series and movies. And, I still don't know about other authors whose work has been adopted on screen.

Name of Book: The Narrows
Author: Ronald Malfi
Publisher: Titan Books
Publication Date:  8 Oct 2024
No. of Pages: 416
Format: Digital

In the aftermath of a terrible storm, the town of Stillwater, Maryland tries to recover what it has lost. From flooded roads and houses to ruined businesses—the residents of the town begin to clean up and return to normal.

In the midst of the clean-up, people begin to see things. Matthew Crawly spies his father in the woodlands above the Narrows, but that cannot be possible; Maggie Quedentock nearly hits a child with her car, only to find an empty road lying before her; and in the middle of it all, Sergeant Ben Journell is thrust into an impossible investigation. Animals are being slaughtered, their brains systematically removed from their bodies. Something is happening to the town of Stillwater…something dark and ancient and evil has its grip on everyone.

The saying goes, still waters run deep, but no one in Stillwater is prepared for just how deep they run, and no one can possibly be ready for what they might find waiting for them in the dark.

Ronald Malfi is the award-winning author of several horror novels, mysteries, and thrillers, including the bestselling horror novel Come with Me. He is the recipient of two Independent Publisher Book Awards, the Beverly Hills Book Award, the Vincent Preis Horror Award, the Benjamin Franklin Award, and his novel Floating Staircase was a finalist for the Bram Stoker Award. He lives with his wife and two daughters in Maryland.

My Opinion

The Narrows by Ronald Malfi is an atmospheric horror story of a small town infested with terrifying creatures. The plot starts with a promising note, and I liked the eerie, spine-chilling atmosphere it created. The sense of dread builds up gradually, making the story even more engaging. The characters were well-written, and none of them slacked in the story, each playing a crucial role in shaping the narrative.

Although the story feels reminiscent of a Stephen King novel, with its small-town horror setting and creeping terror, Malfi still manages to maintain his unique style, making it an enjoyable read. The only drawback was the origin of the creatures, which remained unexplained, leaving some unanswered questions. The climax slowed down a bit but was ultimately satisfying, tying up the story well. Despite this, the book had enough thrills and tension to keep me hooked till the end.

I wish this book would be adapted into a movie, as its chilling setting and unsettling horror would translate well onto the screen. The visuals and suspense would make for an intense and terrifying experience. I would give the book 4 stars.
