Read Between The Lies | Jesse Q Sutanto | Mystery & Thriller | Netgalley Audiobook Review

“How do you view the impact of social media on our lives—would you consider it more beneficial or harmful?”

I think social media is a useful and powerful invention that helps people connect, learn, and share ideas. However, its impact depends on how it’s used. When people use it with negative intentions—like spreading hate, misinformation, or unhealthy comparisons—it can become harmful. So, I don’t see social media itself as bad, but the motives behind its use often decide whether it has a positive or negative influence.

Fern’s dream of becoming a published author is finally coming true. After years of rejection, her debut novel has sold, and she’s ready to join the supportive online community of fellow debuts. But when she discovers her high school bully, Haven, has landed a major book deal and will be debuting alongside her, old wounds reopen.

As the pandemic forces everyone online, tensions escalate in their writing community. While Haven seems to succeed effortlessly, Fern watches her own career crumble. Yet beneath their polished personas lies a darker truth about their shared past—one involving a lost friend, Dani, and secrets neither wants revealed.

Fern isn’t the same person Haven bullied all those years ago. She’s learned that the best revenge stories aren’t written—they’re lived. And she’s been plotting this one for years.

What begins as online rivalry escalates into dangerous obsession. Because neither woman is telling the whole truth about what really happened to Dani…or about who’s the real victim in this story.

My Opinion

Read Between the Lies by Jesse Q. Sutanto is a gripping thriller set against the backdrop of the publishing industry and the volatile world of social media. With sharp storytelling and compelling twists, the novel captures the chaos of online culture, where people chase tweets, likes, and followers while real emotions often get lost. Fern and Haven stand out as powerful, layered characters whose choices keep readers emotionally invested. The tension between them makes it difficult to decide who truly deserves support. Fast-paced and tightly woven, the plot holds attention until the very end, delivering a satisfying conclusion without leaving loose ends.
