Author Introduction

Kate Chopin was an American author of short stories and novels based in Louisiana. Chopin wrote short stories for both children and adults that were published in such national magazines as Atlantic Monthly, Vogue, The Century Magazine, and The Youth's Companion. Her stories aroused controversy because of her subjects and her approach; some critics condemned them as immoral. Chopin also wrote two novels: At Fault (1890) and The Awakening (1899), which are set in New Orleans and Grand Isle, respectively. The characters in her stories are usually residents of Louisiana, and many are Creoles of various ethnic or racial backgrounds.

Blurb

The book is a collection of short stories focusing on the life of women either white or black. All the stories throw light on a social system where women are considered to be under men's rule.

The Awakening is a story of a wife, Mrs. Pontellier, who fell in love with a boy. She wanted to be with the boy and wanted to break away the shackles of the society where independence is forbidden for women.

The other stories also aimed at a society which is biased with color and races. A society which filled with disgust for people of darker color.

My Opinion

Unforgettable Classic

The Awakening and Other selected stories is a wonderful classic which splendidly focuses on lives of women in the society. In fact, the stories display the ugly face of our society, where people are judged based on their color. Furthermore, People have faced these issues for a long time now and are still prevalent in the society. My favorite story in the book is Desiree's Baby, where the story compels to think about the ubiquitous practices in our society. Above all, I would definitely recommend the book. And, also give it 5 stars.

Character Portrayal

The protagonists in The Awakening and other selected stories by Kate Chopin are chiefly women. Women who want to break free, enjoy their independence and are not mere dolls in the hands of men, have been given due importance. Not to mention, the characters are very absorbing and real and conveys a powerful message.

Narrative Style

Kate Chopin in her book The Awakening and Other selected stories has narrated it from a woman's POV. She has adequately outlined a woman's image like a caged bird whose emotions go unheard every time. You can comfortably feel that every sentence conveys an emotional displeasure of women in our society.
