The Last Sketch by Gosia Nealon was up for a blog tour by thebookreviewcrew.com . I have never read a historical romance with war drama. So, I decide to take a chance and read it.

Author Introduction

While Gosia Nealon is a proud New Yorker, she was born and raised in Poland. Her journey to the Big Apple revealed a wealth of cultural differences, but also the values that connect us all. Like the fierce desire to protect family, find love, and ultimately, discover who we are and why we’re here.

Gosia’s award-winning short stories have always delved into life’s biggest questions, but it was the drama, sacrifice, and tragedy of WWII that led her to pen her debut novel, "The Last Sketch."

Growing up in Poland, Gosia heard many firsthand accounts of the war, told from a perspective rarely captured in mainstream literature. She was compelled to breathe  life into Wanda and Finn, two young people falling in love in the midst of the most terrifying conflict of our time.

When Gosia isn’t tapping away at her laptop, she’s often walking the streets of New York. With her husband and two young sons in tow, they search for the most succulent pierogi, transporting them back to the cobbled streets of her childhood.

Blurb

Hitler is on a murder spree in Poland. But, polish resistance is fighting day and night to free themselves. Wanda also helps the resistance as a messenger of vital information and weapons. Her country is her first priority and life. 

Finn, appointed as an agent working for resistance leaves his family behind to serve his country. He disguises himself as Stefan, his twin brother, who is an army officer in Gestapo. But Gerda, Stefan's fiancee doubts him.

The story takes a turn when Wanda and Finn cross paths and their whole life and mission changes. They yearn for each other but their duties always keep them apart.

Will Wanda and Finn be reunited?  What will be Gerda's next step? What will happen to the resistance?

My Opinion

A Perfect Tale of Love Blooming Amidst War

The Last Sketch by Gosia Nealon is an emotional tale of love which blooms during World War II. The story is fast paced and full of action. Poland's situation during the World War has been portrayed beautifully. With every page the book becomes more and more engrossing. Wanda has emerged as a strong character and I really liked her part. Some of the twists and turns are mind blowing and unexpected. The book is a perfect read if you like war and romance. I would, definitely, give 5 stars to the book.

Character Portrayal

Our protagonists, Wanda and Finn are a lovely couple. But, Wanda emerges to be woman of valor and inner strength. Two women, Wanda and Gerda steal the show with their personality. Finn's character as a spy is commendable, but Wanda overpowers him. 

The tertiary characters in the story have played well and are supportive to the plot.

Narrative Style 

The Last Sketch by Gosia Nealon is set in World War II. The author has narrated the story from Wanda and Finn's POV. Poland's situation during the war has been flawlessly recounted.
