Because some doors should never be opened.
New York bookseller Cassie Andrews is not sure what she’s doing with her life. She lives quietly, sharing an apartment with her best friend, Izzy. Then a favourite customer gives her an old book. Full of strange writing and mysterious drawings, at the very front there is a handwritten message:
This is the Book of Doors. Hold it in your hand, and any door is every door.
Cassie is about to discover that the Book of Doors is a special book – a magic book. A book that bestows extraordinary abilities on whoever possesses it. And she is about to learn that there are other magic books out there that can also do wondrous – or dreadful and terrifying – things.
Because where there is magic there is power and there are those who will stop at nothing to possess it.
Suddenly Cassie and Izzy are confronted by violence and danger, and the only person who can help them is Drummond Fox who has a secret library of magical books hidden in the shadows for safekeeping, a man fleeing his own demons. Because there is a nameless evil out there that is hunting them all . . .
Because this book is worth killing for.
Gareth Brown is the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Book of Doors. He spent many years working in the UK Civil Service and is currently Director of Screening for NHS Scotland. He lives with his wife and their two Skye terriers near Edinburgh, but as an avid traveller he can often be found in different cities around the world, poking about in curiosity shops in search of unknowable objects.
My Opinion
The Book of Doors by Gareth Brown is a brilliant fantasy story that breaks boundaries of human affection and greed. The story starts from a magical book that can take you anywhere, but everything comes with a price. With each page, the readers are thrown into a whirlwind of emotions and friendship. The author wants us to understand how despair and pain can be harmful for anyone. The most interesting thing about the book is all the books mentioned in it. Each book has a unique power and can wreak havoc if in the wrong hands.
It is my first time reading a book on time travel. I was in awe with each page as the author brilliantly connects the dots of past, present, and future. Cassie is our FMC, but I liked Izzy more as I felt she is stronger. The climax will put you in confusion, and you will certainly feel that this is not the end. Definitely the book deserves 5 stars.
