Every night, in the college's ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story.

One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn't there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be. But who dug it, and for whom?

Before they go their separate ways, the gravedigger returns. As they trail him through the night, they realize he may be the key to a string of strange happenings around town that have made headlines for the last few weeks--and that they may be closer to the mystery than they thought.

M. L. Rio is an author, but before she was an author she was an actor, and before she was an actor she was just a word nerd whose best friends were books. She holds an MA in Shakespeare Studies from King's College London and Shakespeare's Globe and a PhD in early modern English literature from the University of Maryland, College Park. Her first novel, IF WE WERE VILLAINS, was published in April 2017 by Flatiron Books and has since become an international bestseller.

My Opinion

Graveyard Shift by M. L. Rio is a chilling horror mystery thriller that instantly grabs your attention with its eerie setting—a graveyard—and a close-knit group of friends. The story kicks off with an atmospheric tension that builds steadily, incorporating all the essential elements of classic horror: suspense, darkness, and a creeping sense of dread. From the very beginning, it had me hooked, and several scenes genuinely gave me goosebumps. The characters are engaging, and their dynamic adds depth to the unfolding mystery. As the plot progresses, the fear intensifies, making it hard to put the book down. However, the story concludes with an open ending, leaving several questions unanswered. While that added to the unsettling tone, I couldn’t help but wish it were a full-length novel. The ending left me craving more, and I hope the author considers expanding this into a series. It’s a perfect spooky read! The book deserves 5 stars.
