Never Let Me Go | Kazuo Ishiguro | Contemporary Fiction | Book Review

How's your reading going? Mine has been really slow lately because I can't seem to find any good books worth reading.

Name of Book: Never Let Me Go
Author: Kazuo Ishiguro
Publisher: Faber & Faber
Publication Date: 25 Feb 2010
No. of Pages: 304
Format: Digital

As children, Kathy, Ruth and Tommy attended an exclusive boarding-school in the English countryside. Idyllic in some ways yet vaguely sinister, 'Hailsham' was a place of intense friendships, mysterious rules, and 'guardians' who constantly reminded the students how special they were. Now thirty-one, Kathy looks back on their shared past and tells how she and her friends gradually came to understand the shocking reason for the careful nurturing they had received. An affecting meditation on friendship, love and mortality.

KAZUO ISHIGURO was born in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1954 and moved to Britain at the age of five. His eight previous works of fiction have earned him many honors around the world, including the Nobel Prize in Literature and the Booker Prize. His work has been translated into over fifty languages, and The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go, both made into acclaimed films, have each sold more than 2 million copies. He was given a knighthood in 2018 for Services to Literature. He also holds the decorations of Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from France and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star from Japan.

My Opinion

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro is a contemporary fiction novel that explores the themes of love, friendship, and the fragility of life. As a fan of Japanese authors, I had high expectations from this book, especially given Ishiguro’s reputation. However, I found myself disappointed as the story progressed. While the premise is unique and the setting initially intriguing, the characters seemed overly preoccupied with their sexual relationships, which overshadowed the emotional depth I was hoping for. The narrative felt emotionally distant at times, and I struggled to connect with the characters or their journeys. The story lacked the kind of meaningful reflections or powerful moments that usually make a book memorable. Despite the potential to be a moving tale about human connection and loss, it didn’t leave a lasting impact on me. In the end, it felt like a missed opportunity for a truly thought-provoking read. The book deserves 3 stars.
