Do you love reading Indigenous authors? Tell me your favorite.
This was actually my first time reading an Indigenous author, and honestly, it was such a refreshing experience. The storytelling felt raw, grounded, and very different from my usual reads. I loved how deeply it connected to identity, culture, and lived experiences without trying too hard. It stayed with me even after I finished the book, which doesn’t happen very often. Definitely made me want to pick up more Indigenous voices soon.

Welcome to Anoka, Minnesota, a small city just outside of the Twin Cities dubbed "The Halloween Capital of the World" since 1937. Here before you lie several tales involving bone collectors, pagan witches, werewolves, skeletal bison, and cloned children. It is up to you to decipher between fact and fiction as the author has woven historical facts into his narratives. With his debut horror collection, Cheyenne and Arapaho author Shane Hawk explores themes of family, grief, loneliness, and identity through the lens of indigenous life.
My Opinion
Anoka by Shane Hawk is an Indigenous horror anthology featuring a set of genuinely creepy and engaging stories. The collection is thoughtfully curated, with each story exploring a different theme, showcasing the author’s commendable storytelling skills. Spanning six tales—from the living dead to werewolves—this book easily makes for a memorable evening horror read. The diversity in horror elements keeps the pacing fresh and intriguing throughout. My favorite story was “Soilborne,” which stood out for its atmosphere and impact. Overall, it was a fun and satisfying read for horror lovers.
