Recursion | Blake Crouch | Science Fiction | Book Review

Which memory from your life do you hold closest to your heart?

The memory I hold closest to my heart is the moment my son was born. Nothing in my life compares to that feeling — the mix of overwhelming love, relief, gratitude, and pure joy all at once. The instant I saw him, everything changed. It was as if the world paused just for us. That day gave my life a new meaning, a new purpose, and a love so deep that words can never fully capture it.

At first, it looks like a disease.

An epidemic that spreads through no known means, driving its victims mad with memories of a life they never lived.

But the force that’s sweeping the world is no pathogen. It’s just the first shockwave, unleashed by a stunning discovery – and what’s in jeopardy is not just our minds.

In New York City, Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth – and in a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone holds the key to this mystery . . . and the tools for fighting back.

Together, Barry and Helena will have to confront their enemy – before they, and the world, are trapped in a loop of ever-growing chaos.

My Opinion

Recursion by Blake Crouch is a gripping time-travel adventure that constantly pushes readers to question what is real and what is merely a constructed memory. I truly admired the central concept and the scientific foundation behind it. The author’s storytelling feels sharp, powerful, and thoroughly researched. At several points, I found myself pleasantly disoriented, unsure of which timeline to trust — which, I believe, was intentional. The plot races forward without giving you a moment to breathe.

However, near the climax, events begin to blur together, and the pace becomes overwhelmingly fast as everything converges toward its dramatic conclusion. The emotional stakes rise intensely, but the rapid layering of timelines and realities can feel slightly chaotic. Still, the ambition of the narrative and its thought-provoking exploration of memory, love, and existence make it a compelling and unforgettable read.
