Travis Wren has an unusual talent for locating missing people. Often hired by families as a last resort, he takes on the case of Maggie St. James—a well-known author of dark, macabre children’s books—and is soon led to a place many believed to be only a legend.
Called Pastoral, this reclusive community was founded in the 1970s by like-minded people searching for a simpler way of life. By all accounts, the commune shouldn’t exist anymore and soon after Travis stumbles upon it…he disappears. Just like Maggie St. James.
Years later, Theo, a lifelong member of Pastoral, discovers Travis’s abandoned truck beyond the border of the community. No one is allowed in or out, not when there’s a risk of bringing a disease—rot—into Pastoral. Unraveling the mystery of what happened reveals secrets that Theo, his wife, Calla, and her sister, Bee, keep from one another. Secrets that prove their perfect, isolated world isn’t as safe as they believed—and that darkness takes many forms.
Shea Ernshaw is the #1 New York Times, USA Today, and Indie bestselling author of The Wicked Deep, Winterwood, A Wilderness of Stars, Long Live the Pumpkin Queen, and A History of Wild Places. Her books have been published in over twenty countries, repeatedly been chosen as Indie Next Picks, and A History of Wild Places was a Book of the Month selection. She is also the winner of the Oregon Book Award. She is happiest when lost in a good book, lost in the woods, or writing her next novel.
My Opinion
One of the best thrillers that I've read this year
A History of Wild Places by Shea Ernshaw is a spine-chilling thriller and one of the best that I have read in 2024. The plot completely blew my mind with its twists and turns. The book can also be considered a cult thriller. Right from the beginning, the plot grips your attention with Travis Wren as a detective. The real thrill starts when the readers come face to face with the pastoral. And the author's amazing writing style made the whole affair so atmospheric that my heart began to thump with every page. The climax was so engaging that I felt like watching a Hollywood movie.
But I still feel like the story is not complete yet. There is more to it after the climax, and that lingers even after you have finished the book. Each character felt alive in my mind like it was happening right outside my window. This book deserves a lot more recognition than it achieved. The book definitely deserves 5 stars.
